Academic Programme
Students are assessed on arrival and then an individually tailored academic programme is created for each student. As well as being in the JIG class, the students are all assigned to a tutor group with the British students. A student arriving with little or no English will begin the year by having most of their lessons in JIG and they will study mainly English and Mathematics as well as Science, Geography and British Studies. They will also attend lessons such as Art and Physical Education with their British classmates. As the students’ language ability increases they will join in more of the TPS lessons with the British students . By the summer term students normally join subjects such as ICT, Design Technology, Drama, Music, Mathematics, Science and Geography.
What happens next?
Following the year in the JIG class, most students will be fully integrated into normal lessons in TPS. Students will still receive some English and subject support for as long as it is needed. The JIG English language teacher will have an in depth knowledge of each student’s educational needs and can therefore pass on any important information to their teachers throughout their time at Taunton School.
The classroom
The JIG classroom is well equipped to deliver a diverse range of subjects in a variety of different ways in order to ensure the lessons are both interesting and challenging. There is an interactive whiteboard and a computer for each student with internet access. During Science lessons the students will also spend time in the Science laboratories.
Subjects taught in JIG
English: Students are taught English through the four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Students will follow a spelling and pronunciation programme. There will also be the opportunity to take Cambridge English examinations.

British studies: Students will learn about British life and culture through a variety of different language based activities. They will learn about British festivals and celebrations, and British History.
The students also learn how to touch type on the computer and will have regular opportunities to practise and develop their computer literacy skills through computer based activities. |
