Settling in...

We realise that when your child arrives at Taunton International Study Centre (TISC), there are many adjustments for them to make. Firstly, they have said goodbye to their families and friends and they will miss home. Secondly, they have to study in a second language and learn what an English classroom is like. Thirdly, they have to understand and adjust to a new culture. This time can be a very emotional time for your child as there are many changes happening in their lives.

We have designed a programme to help your child to settle in. When they arrive at TISC they have a week of induction. During this week they learn about the TISC routines and rules. These rules have been written to ensure that your child can study in a safe and friendly environment. This week is a good opportunity for them to find out what facilities are offered at Taunton School, to visit the local town and begin to understand what is accepted culturally. It is also a chance to meet the teachers and find out about the academic subjects that are offered. At the end of this first week your child will take English and Maths placement tests which will help us to put them in to the right classes, having taken into consideration their level and their choice of academic subjects.

While at TISC one of the subjects your child will study is PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) which is taught by the Principal, Caroline Nixon. During the first term we aim to help your child to understand their new culture and we believe this will help them to develop personally and socially. The Principal can get to know your child well through these lessons and is always available to any child who has any academic or pastoral difficulty.
